What to expect

The Railway Department of the Taiwan Governor-General's Office, a national historic site, was once the site of the Taipei Machinery Bureau during the Qing Dynasty. It was also Taiwan's first modern train repair industrial park and later became the administrative center for Taiwan's railway transportation. Following the completion of Taipei New Station in 1989, the Taiwan Railway Administration relocated and the space became vacant. Since 2006, the Taiwan Museum has collaborated with the Taiwan Railways Administration to transform the Railway Department into a museum park.

The park boasts six nationally designated historic buildings: the government office, cafeteria, octagonal building, power supply room, engineering office, and wartime command center (air-raid shelter). All were constructed during the Japanese colonial period. The main building, completed in 1920, features a half-timbered structure with brick lower part and timber upper part, constructed largely of Alishan cypress wood. Its exterior is a Queen Anne Revival style of red brick and white imitation stone. Along with the octagonal building, it is a representative work of Matsunosuke Moriyama, a technician in the Construction Division of the Taiwan Governor-General's Office, during his later years in Taiwan.

The Ministry of Railways Historic Relics Exhibition features four themed galleries, six digital guides, and 20 on-site displays from dismantling investigations, showcasing the Ministry's history and architectural features. Through the lens of restoration documentation, the exhibition takes visitors back to the site, offering a glimpse into the craftsmen, techniques, and considerations behind the restoration process. Discover the fascinating treasures of the Ministry of Railways' historic buildings in person.
